Valentino: Master of Couture

Valentino Exhibition at Somerset House

If you havent had the opportunity to see the ‘Last Emperor’ documentary on Valentino. Then the ‘Master of Couture’ exhibition at Somerset House will give you a insight into the life of Italys most famous designer..

I have always admired Valentino’s vintage collections but not until you get up close to his work, do you understand the quality and elegance of his designs. The exhibition shows detailed examples of garment construction. With fabric samples of ebellishment and structure, on view in glass cases.

Valentino was the man that dressed celebrities and this is clear through-out the exhibition, he has dressed a variety of people from princess to pop stars. “This major new exhibition celebrating the life and work of Valentino showcases over 130 exquisite haute couture designs worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow in an exciting installation created specially for Somerset House.”

The ‘Red Dress Collection’ has always been my favourite of Valentino’s, from the exhibition the 1959 dress worn by Brook Shields. The dress has red tulle with corsage rose detail.

Sadly Valentinos empire ended when he retired in 2008 but his ledged lives on today. The Valentino brand still hits the catwalks every season with show stopping designs. As the brand has expanded into a fashion group, I always look forward to see what has been created.
